Flashing Yellow Arrows to Hit Tampa Bay Traffic Lights
According to the TBT, Tampa Bay motorists tired of waiting to make left turns at busy intersections will soon get help in the form of flashing yellow arrows.
Florida is preparing to roll out more than 75 of the traffic signals at key intersections around Florida in an effort to boost safety, keep traffic flowing and reduce gasoline consumption.
The first flashing yellow arrow in Hillsborough County will be installed at Fowler Avenue and Jefferson Road in a few months. Pinellas County installed a flashing yellow arrow at Nebraska Avenue and Belcher Road in Palm Harbor in November 2009- the first one in Florida!
Flashing yellow arrows are already in 35 states, more than 1,000 intersections and the numbers continue to grow.
The flashing yellow lights indicate to drivers to turn left but yield first to oncoming cars or pedestrians. It is too early to tell whether the devices reduce the number of crashes.

Auto Accident? View your crash reports online
TAMPA – If you’re in a car accident, it should now be a lot easier to get your hands on the records. That’s because politicians changed the law as of July 1st as a direct result of a FOX 13 investigation.
Earlier this year, investigative reporter Doug Smith showed us how the law regarding “crash reports” was in desperate need of repair, and this past legislative session lawmakers in Tallahassee went to work.
“We’re not perfect in Tallahassee, anything but perfect,” says State Senator Mike Fasano (R-New Port Richey.) “With the technology today, that information especially crash reports should be available to them immediately,” Fasano said, calling the change long overdue.
Jeff Brandes, a state representative from St. Petersburg, wants to see the records go online.
“I think it definitely should be done online, and it could be done at a minimal cost,” he said.
Deep sinkhole opens under woman’s bed
The first step out of bed could have been a big one.
A woman in Guatemala City reports that a sinkhole, 40 feet deep and almost 3 feet across, opened under her bed Monday.
“When we heard the loud boom we thought a gas canister from a neighboring home had exploded, or there had been a crash on the street,” Inocenta Hernandez, 65, said in an Agence France-Presse report.
“We rushed out to look and saw nothing. A gentleman told me that the noise came from my house, and we searched until we found it under my bed,” AFP quotes Hernandez as saying.
The area is prone to sinkholes.
In May 2010, a sinkhole about 60 feet across and 100 feet deep opened in the area, swallowing buildings and an intersection.
In 2007, another sinkhole claimed three lives in Barrio San Antonio in Guatemala City.
Hernandez told AFP that she is thankful the surprise under her bed wasn’t any bigger.
“Thank God there are only material damages, because my grandchildren were running around the house, into that room and out to the patio,” AFP quoted her as saying.

New York Times: Antilock Brakes Aren’t Just for Four Wheels
Motorcycle makers and federal highway-safety regulators are taking a harder look at whether advanced safety technology can help reduce fatal accidents and injuries for those who ride.
Manufacturers, at the urging of federal safety officials, are moving to make antilock brakes available on more models. BMW AG is making the feature standard on all models as of the 2012 model year. At the same time, the government and industry are moving ahead with new studies of whether antilock brakes, which can help a rider stay upright during a hard stop, can reduce motorcycle fatalities.
BMWBMW is making antilock brakes standard on all of its motorcycles, such as this K 1600 GT model.
Unlike auto makers and drivers, the motorcycle industry and riders have been relatively slow to embrace safety technology. Thirty years ago, car manufacturers fought safety requirements and most drivers didn’t bother using their seat belts. Now, auto makers compete to offer the latest crash-survival and avoidance technology and more than 80% of motorists buckle up—even if only to avoid getting a ticket.
Sinkhole Threatens Two Tarpon Spring Homes

TARPON SPRINGS, Florida – Two families in a Pinellas County neighborhood have been evacuated after large sinkholes caused a home to cave in.
Anitra Merricks says her family watched the ground open up, starting about 6 p.m. Thursday.
As family members quickly moved their cars, another hole formed.

The two holes eventually combined to form a large sinkhole. Tarpon Springs public works director Thomas Funcheon says the hole is now large enough “to fit a couple of good-sized vehicles.”
Officials say the house, built in 1958, is too unsafe for Merricks’ grandparents to stay in. Merricks says 83-year-old Virginia Crawford and 90-year-old Nathaniel Crawford, will have to find a new home. They had lived there for 50 years.
The Red Cross is helping relocate the family.
The house next door was also evacuated, due to the sinkhole.
Just before noon Friday, officials say crews were able to fill the sinkhole and secured all utility lines. Engineers will evaluate the situation later in the afternoon and report on a possible cause of the sinkholes and their recommendations. For more on this article visit.
