NEW Florida law pursues renters for overdue landlord fees

Under the new Florida law that will pass next week, the homeowners association can go straight to the renter for any landlord overdue fees. According to the Orlando Sentinel, if the owner fails to make payment and the renter does not cover the deficit, the renter faces eviction under the new ruling. The new law will take effect July 1.

Here is how the system should go… the renter is supposed to simply pay rent to their landlord and landlord is to pay Our Community fees associated with their house or condo units to the homeowner’s association. With the lack of cooperation from the landlords, the homeowner’s are taking action. And it is an action worth noting!

Metro Orlando has an overwhelming high issue with homeowner fees; which led the nation in rental and homeowner vacancies during the first quarter, according to U.S. census figures. The census states this as the highest vacancy rates among the nation’s 75 largest metro areas.

Many renters are being caught in the middle of this landlord vs. homeowner battle. Be careful who you rent to! Is your landlord paying their homeowner fees?!
