Social Media in the courtroom and how it can affect your case
Since the inception of social media and the wide availability of technological sources, people have invented new ways of making personal information readily available to anyone. The backlash of social media has affected the workplace, relationships, business, and even the legal process.
In recent news Social Media has been utilized to expose lies, raise money for legal defense, and even discover that jurors in the courtroom are “facebooking” about the case. Parties to a legal matter need to be made aware of the potential consequences of divulging personal information on the World Wide Web.
Recently, in the highly publicized Zimmerman case, the Judge revoked Zimmerman’s bond after discovering that he did not adequately disclose his finances because he was raising money via Twitter and Facebook for his legal defense. This publicly available social media landed Zimmerman back in jail and clearly illustrates how you can unintentionally compromise your circumstances.
The ease of access to the Internet has created complicated new areas of ethical concern for lawyers and litigants alike. It is important to understand the potential negative effect of what you make known via social media, and realize that it may have consequences that affect you legally. Being conscious of what information you make available and staying educated on how and who can access your information is very important.
At Blick Law firm, we make an effort to inform our clients of the potential dangers of making private information accessible online.
